10 Ways to Improve Heart Health

Heart health can often be overlooked, but improving heart health can also mean a large difference between the chances of having a heart attack or getting heart disease. There are a number of ways to achieve good cardiovascular health with cardiac monitoring and reduce your chances for heart disease and other risk factors that can come from an unhealthy lifestyle.

1. Eat Healthy Foods: This is one of the most essential components to a healthy heart. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and foods that contain fiber and lean protein are good ways to start eating a more balanced diet.  This can also help with weight loss, another risk factor contributing to heart health.

2. Exercise: An active heart is a healthy heart. Lack of exercise can be a risk factor for heart disease. A 30-minute workout 3 to 5 times a week can greatly contribute to a healthier heart.

3. Quit Smoking: Or don’t start. This is a significant factor that increases likelihood of heart disease and cancer. This also can increase blood pressure that can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

4. Reduce Stress: Find an activity that can take your mind off of a hard or stressful day. Stress can affect our health, so try exercise or yoga to clear your mind.

5. Drink a Little Alcohol: One glass of alcohol a day for women and two for men can help reduce the risk of heart disease. Don’t drink too much though; alcohol has empty calories and too much can cause high blood pressure and lead to other risks.

6. Eat More Fish: Fish contains Omega-3 fatty acids that may decrease blood pressure, reduce blood clotting, and reduce the risks of heart disease and sudden cardiac death. Eating two servings a week is recommended.

7. Limit Sugar Intake: Similar to drinking too much alcohol, sugar can increase blood pressure, and also lead to diabetes. This also contributes to high cholesterol and increased risk of developing heart disease.

8. Get Enough Sleep: Lack of sleep can worsen blood pressure and leave you at risk for stroke and heart disease.  It can also increase stress that can put you at risk for heart attacks. Between 7-9 hours of sleep each night will leave your heart healthier.

9. Reduce Salt: Instead of using salt, cook with herbs and read labels to make sure you aren’t taking in more than about a teaspoon a day. This can significantly help lower your blood pressure.

10. Lose Weight: Being overweight is a serious risk factor for several health problems that can increase cardiovascular risks such as high blood pressure, diabetes and other heart concerns.
