Warn Your Diabetes Patients About Heart Health

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that 29 million individuals in the United States suffer from diabetes. When this condition isn’t monitored and kept under control, it can lead to a host of other major health problems. ReactDx, makers of a state-of-the-art mobile heart monitor, are sharing findings from a recent report that discusses this very issue.

The August 7th, 2017 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology lists cardiovascular disease as the most common cause of death among those who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Surprisingly, the study showed that of those who suffered from heart-related issues, 50 percent actually met the CDC’s guidelines for prevention.

The authors of this report firmly believe that diabetes patients should be utilizing the prescribed therapies that have already been approved and proven to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. This is especially imperative due to the author’s prediction that one out of every three individuals will suffer from type 2 diabetes by the year 2050.

The first course of action recommended by the authors of the study is to follow select lifestyle guidelines. These include encouraging patients to become more physically active, advocating for smokers to give up the habit, and reviewing the individual’s diet log and making healthier food suggestions. Weight management is also important, as obesity has been linked to high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, and stroke.

Next, the authors point out that it is important to address cardiovascular risk management among patients with type 2 diabetes. Keeping blood pressure well managed, paying attention to cholesterol and blood lipid levels, and controlling blood sugar are just a few of the suggestions made in the study. The authors also advocate for the use of aspirin, which thins the blood and keeps it from forming clumps of platelets that can result in a heart attack.

From this report, it is easy to see how important it is for physicians to encourage their type 2 diabetes patients to become proactive when it comes to their heart health.
