7 Ways to Combat High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a concern that many people worry about and regardless of your age, it could be a concern. The average blood pressure reading should be 120/80 and if those numbers get to around 140/90 you may be at risk for high blood pressure that leads to heart attacks, strokes and other life threatening conditions. Lifestyle changes can help avoid the use of medication and several methods along with cardiac monitoring can be used to help keep your blood pressure low.

1. Eat healthy diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and avoid eating a lot of red meat, sugary foods and beverages and saturated fats.

2. Exercise and weight loss can help lower your blood pressure. The more you lose the lower your blood pressure will likely be. Even just 10 pounds can have an impact.

3. Limit the intake of sodium in your diet. Read labels of the food you eat and don’t add extra salt to your meals and use herbs and spices instead.

4. Find a way to reduce your stress, whether it’s exercise, meditation or any activity to help you take your mind off things.

5. Eating potassium-rich foods can reduce excess sodium in your body, which can lead to lower blood pressure. Potassium-rich foods can include avocados, bananas, fish, yogurt and soybeans.

6. Quit smoking. Although it’s easier said than done, smoking can leave your blood pressure high throughout the day and also lead to other health risks.

7. Reduce the intake of alcohol. You don’t have to completely eliminate it, but it does interfere with normal blood flow to the heart and can cause high blood pressure.
